 
Alice Doyle: 32 The village doctor who has taken over the practice of her recently deceased father: John Boyle. Born in Brytewood of a Pixie mother and a mortal father, Alice has long dismissed her mother's and grandmother's traditions as superstitions. Science is logical and safe. Their murmurings and claims are unscientific and unproven but in Book One Alice learns sometimes science is not enough.
Simon Doyle: 26 (POW since Dunkirk) and Alan Doyle 20 (Royal Navy) . Alice's younger brothers.
Helena Burrows: 93 Alice's maternal grandmother. A displaced Devon Pixie who values her heritage. She seldom uses her pixie abilities, aware of her power, and the responsibility involved in influencing mortal actions.
Pixies more incredibly fast, almost to the point of invisibility, can hide easily in woods and bushes, can move objects by their willpower and, on occasion, draw on the Ancient Magic.
Margaret (Mother) Longhurst: 75 widow and reputed witch according to village gossip. She is in fact a white witch who is also skilled in divination, spells and herb lore and the casting of simple spells.
Sgt. Howell Pendragon 58: Sergeant in the Home Guard and a shapeshifting dragon. Can shift into dragon shape, fly and breathe fire, but has not shifted for several years. In human shape he has immense physical strength, which he hides most of the time.

Gloria Prewitt 38: District Nurse and werefox. Gloria must shift during full moon and other times at will. As fox she has exceptional night vision, and can run extremely fast. Even in human form, she has far better that usual vision and can outrun mere humans.
Samuel Whorleigh: 45 local grocer, black marketeer and elf, has the power to hypnotize mortals by his voice, particularly when he sings. Uses this ability to a small degree but has never used his full powers of persuasion. Elves can also make themselves invisible.
Ted Whittaker: 53 owner/ proprietor of the local garage.

Mary Prioux: 25, School teacher and water sprite, evacuated from Guernsey with fifteen school children now billeted in various families in the village. Water sprites, need the proximity of water to keep their equilibrium and peace of mind. Mary lived by the sea in her home in Guernsey, In Brytewood, she spends most of her free time near the ancient Hammer Pond on Brytewood Common.
Andrew Barron: 36 Supervisor at Munitions plant. Billeted in the village.
Jeff Williams: Assistant Supervisor at Plant
Peter Watson: 31 Conscientious objector now working as Alice's part time assistant and in the clinic of the nearby munitions plant.

Vampires can not shift, but can fly, run extremely fast and possess incredible strength and have excellent night vision. They must have blood to survive. Go out in daylight but their powers have greatly reduced. Are very sensitive to contact with wood. Can be killed by a stake though the heart or decapitation. Heal very quickly from injuries but need blood to do so.
